As promised, the sun shone on The Parish Gala last Saturday, and brought the crowds to the Parish Community Centre, on the hottest day of 2008.

The event was opened at 2.00 p.m. by The Mayor and Mayoress of Barnsley Cllr and Mrs Ken Sanderson who then spent time meeting members of the local community, many thanks to both of them.

This year’s attractions included a fantastic display of classic cars, Rolling Thunder, with genuine American army vehicles and a New York Police car, Woodhead Mountain Rescue, Rocky’s horses and various stalls including Neighbourhood Watch, the Trans-Pennine Trail and the Scouts with their greasy pole.

The Committee members provided music, a bar, refreshments, a cake stall, a tombola and a dog show with a difference. There was also a ‘welly wanging’ competition, and the plate smashing proved to be extremely popular.

The scarecrows from the competition were on display (apart from the one which some kind sole had decided to steal from the Community Centre during the week). We also had very generously lent to us by members of the Women’s Institute scarecrows from the recent Millhouse scarecrow trail.

The Huddersfield and District Model Aircraft club was on hand to show off their talents and the youth club sold pop and sweets (The pop was extremely popular).

There was a mega raffle with prizes donated from local and not so local organisations and a £50.00 top prize.

The dog show was well attended and special thanks to Sam’s owner for her unusual entry.

Special thanks must go to the Dunford Parish Community Association Committee members and friends and family who gave up their time on the day to make the gala such a success.

The gala week will concluded with a 70’s disco on Saturday 2nd August.

We do thank everyone who came along to the gala and we hope you all enjoyed it. Next year’s gala is scheduled for 25th July, 2.00 – 5.00 p.m. Please come along.
